Centenary Dinner and Hall of Fame

2008 marked the Centenary of the Old Brighton Grammarians Society which was founded by Dr Crowther in October 1908 with the stated aims “To keep Old Boys in touch with each other and the School, to develop Old Boy Clubs and to organise various social functions”.

One hundred years on, the Committee of the OBGS arranged a “Social Function”, the likes of which had never been seen before.

The Centenary Dinner was held in the Great Hall of the NGV International (National Gallery of Victoria) in St Kilda Road.  As part of this gala celebration and to recognise the achievements of our highest achieving Old Boys, the inaugural BGS Hall of Fame inductees were announced.

The School Choirs, under the leadership of the Director of Music and maestro, Rodney Ford, enthralled the gathering with their angelic renditions of “The Lord Bless you and keep you” and “Festival Sanctus”.

Twenty seven old boys were inducted into the BGS Hall of Fame, of which 11 were posthumously awarded.  Three of the posthumous awards were accepted by relatives of the late inductees.

Other highlights of the evening were the presentation of Honorary Life Membership of the OBGS to Peter Toms, a magnificent toast to the School by highly successful Old Boy, Peter Yates (1976), our guest speaker, former Australian Test cricketer, Kerry O’Keeffe, the Past School Captains Walk of Honour.

We were blessed to have the services of Past Parent, Stephen Phillips who not only acted as M.C. but created the audio visual presentation of the Hall of Fame awards and interviewed the inductees.
