Alexander "Jock" Sturrock

Jock Sturrock was the first Australian to represent his country in sailing at the 1948 Olympics and in the years ahead he would compete at three more Olympics, winning bronze in Melbourne in 1956 and having the honour of carrying the flag at the opening ceremony in Rome in 1960.

He will always be remembered for skippering Gretel to a victory over the Americans in the 1962 America’s Cup; their first race loss in 28 years. He was honoured with the Lindy Award for sportsmanship, Australian yachtsman of the year and ultimately Australian of the year.

Jock Sturrock died in 1997 at the age of 82.
