Alfred Dufrayer

During the Boer War, Queen Victoria decided to personally decorate her heroes. She crocheted  four scarves which would be presented to private soldiers who displayed great acts of gallantry. Only one Australian was honoured. Alfred Dufrayer, who had been educated at BGS before enrolling in the Mounted Rifles.  Dufrayer had ignored heavy Boer gunfire to rescue a fallen comrade. He was presented with the scarf by the Duke of York, later King George V during his visit to Sydney.
