Rennie Ellis

Rennie Ellis was Australia’s best known social photographer and a whole lot more.  He captured Australians from every angle, from every walk of life and over a lifetime built an archive of more than half a million images.

His candid social photography in the glossy magazines may have paid the bills but it was his work on the seamier side of life that caught the essence of Australia.

Rennie was Melbourne's eternally young, omnipresent chronicler, always cheerful, always snapping, always looking for his next shot, a sense of mischief and restlessness mixed with a relentless optimism. Rennie died in 2003 at the age of 63.

Rennie’s award was accepted by  his Widow, Kerrie Oldfield-Ellis
