After completing his PhD at Melbourne University, Robin Batterham took up a postdoctoral position with ICI England and on his return to Australia and was employed as a research scientist by CSIRO. He would move to CRA and then to Rio Tinto. As a chemical and mining engineer, he has known few equals in this country and in 1999 was appointed Chief Scientist for the Commonwealth of Australia.
