William Grant
The 1988 Australian movie The Lighthorsemen, paid tribute to his daring. In this epic charge at Beersheba, it would be an Old Brighton Grammarian at the head. William Grant, under the leadership of General Sir Harry Chauvel, devised a plan to overcome the perilous situation the allied troops were in. Facing certain death from lack of food and water, the need to take Beersheba and gain access to the water wells was imperative. Grant devised a plan to mount a cavalry charge on the machine gun protected fortress with ultimate success and with the loss of only a handful of allied soldiers. He would be promoted to Brigadier General and ride in many great battles over the last years of the war. He was recognised with the DSO and Bar and the Order of the Nile for his gallantry. Grant died in Queensland in 1939.
