Catching up with an Inductee!

The Hon Peter Reith (OB 68) attended Senior School assembly yesterday to be presented with his BGS Hall of Fame Award as he was unable to receive his award at the Old Grammarians’ Society Centenary Dinner in October last year.

During the assembly, Peter’s contribution to society as a Politician was outlined by Mr Skelton who also spoke of Peter's rich involvement during his schooldays: Prefect, House Captain, Captain of Boats, CUO in Cadets, involved in drama, public speaking, debating, fundraising and, as well as rowing, he represented the School at football and athletics.

Peter then addressed assembly and spoke fondly of his time at BGS and of his friendships from those days. He also outlined the fact that the boys are involved in politics already, perhaps within their sporting clubs or on school committees. He urged boys to be involved regardless of their political leanings relating a number of instances when he was involved with members of other parties taking a common stand on a point of interest. Finally he urged the boys to believe in themselves and remember Obama's slogan, “You can do it”.

Peter is our only Old Boy to have achieved the position of Federal Cabinet Minister having held the portfolios of Minister for Employment, and it was indeed a privilege to have him attend our assembly yesterday.
