APS Athletics Report
On Saturday the BGS Athletics team arrived at Olympic Park looking forward to following up on the good performances that gave us 10 A Divisions in the Heats on Wednesday. The feel amongst the boys was positive as we did our traditional team lap half an hour before the first event. While BGS could not match some of the other schools, we were nevertheless determined to outscore some of our competitors. We certainly achieved this goal. Our final placing of 8th put us well clear of Wesley and the two Geelong schools when the final points were announced at the end of the day. While every boy gave his best on the day, with a number of personal best times, distances and heights achieved, the following boys gained Top 3 placings:
Cameron Menzies
1st Under 15 Shot Put
Matthew Fogarty (Year 8)
3rd Under 15 High Jump
Jackson Bennett
3rdUnder 17 100m;
Sean Hendricks
1st Under 17 Hurdles and 3rd Under 17 200m
Co-Captain Ben Austen
3rd Open Triple Jump and 2nd Open Long Jump
Thanks for all the support we were given by those boys who were there on the day and a special mention to Patch Clapp of Year 9 who videoed the day and Mr Simon Kessler who was responsible for some great photography. Congratulations to Xavier College who won the Athletics for the first time since 1991.
At the Athletics Dinner each of the above boys received a trophy to acknowledge their Top 3 placing. In addition, Ben Austen (Co-captain this year) and Sean Hencricks were announced as co-winners of the prestigious Brendan Mathews Perpetual Trophy for best BGS Athlete of the meeting.

Ute Full of Food
A reminder you that our last Ute Full of Food for St. Mark’s Fitzroy will be held on Friday week, 6 November. It is our Christmas collection, so any little Christmassy food that could be included would add to our collection. Of course the basics like pasta, pasta sauce, rice, tinned fruit and vegetables (preferably with ring pull-tops), biscuits and breakfast cereal are still necessary items. Could I ask you all to support this worthwhile cause? It can only be successful if the whole BGS community support it. Don’t forget that Brighton Grammar is now the largest single supplier of food for St. Mark’s and they will have to wait at least four months before our first collection in 2010. Povety doesn’t take a Christmas holiday.

University of Melbourne Mentor Scheme Presentation Evening
On Tuesday evening (27 October) three students from Brighton Grammar School – Jason Tang, Kalin Kempster and Jonathan Goddard joined 19 other students from schools around Melbourne to take part in the Presentation Evening of the University of Melbourne Mentor Program. For several years Brighton Grammar has been an active participant in the Mentor Program. Boys have been invited to join the Program based on a careful assessment of their academic performance and their potential to benefit from and contribute to the Program. The scheme provides for each student to work closely with a University Mentor who is either a qualified Doctor of Philosophy or an advanced PhD student. The student Mentee works with the Mentor over a period of five months on a Research Project which is decided in the early stages of the Mentorship. The Program culminates in the Presentation Evening at University House when each of the students presents his or her findings.
This year the presentations included topics such as ‘Regulatory T Cells in Autoimmune Disease and Cancer’ and ‘Australia’s International Law Obligations and their Application in Educational Rights’. The Brighton Grammar Presentations were: ‘Latin Squares and Cryptograghy’ (Jason Tang), Willam Shakepseare’s Tempestuous Tourism’ (Kalin Kempster) and ‘A Comparative Analysis of Sanctions for Murder’ (Jonathan Goddard).
The evening was attended by the Deputy Headmaster and Mrs Skelton, with Dr Johnston, who were delighted to witness the extraordinarily high standard from all students, with the three Brighton Grammar students producing first class presentations that brought great credit to them and to the school.

Valedictory Day Helpers
A big thank you to the Year 11 parents who helped out at the Valedictory Afternoon Tea by making food and helping on the day. The afternoon was a great success due to the combined efforts of everyone involved and it certainly made our job easier to have so many willing helpers. Thanks once again and we can all look forward to attending this function as guests next year.
