Getting Dads Involved
15 September 2009

At BGS we value and encourage the involvement of fathers with their sons. And this has certainly been demonstrated over the past couple of weeks in our middle school, Rosstrevor, with two wonderful opportunities created for fathers to spend quality time with their sons.
A very successful Father and Son Breakfast was held attracting over 100 fathers and their sons. Year 12 student Jack Watts was the guest speaker and a very special part of the morning was when Jack’s father, Andrew, also contributed to the discussion about the role fathers should play in their son’s lives. Whilst much of the talk was based around Jack’s football experiences during the year since being drafted as Number 1 in the National Draft by Melbourne, there were also some very strong but simple messages about the notion of fathering in today’s society. Andrew in particular, spoke passionately about the need for fathers to stay involved in their son’s lives during the teenage years.
Last week, Rosstrevor’s second Father Son Chapel Service was held. Again, it was a very special occasion with the St Andrews Church overflowing. After Chapel, fathers and their sons had the opportunity to venture down to Church Street for breakfast and/or coffee. It was wonderful seeing many fathers sitting with their sons over breakfast and just talking, something time-poor parents often find hard to do during the course of a normal week.
Plans are well underway for the inaugural Year 8 Father Son Getaway in October and over fifty fathers and their sons are expected to attend this special weekend in Sorrento.
