A curriculum especially designed for boys
Brighton Grammar School exists to provide a stimulating, challenging and exciting learning environment for the boys and staff of the School. And learning in the 21st century has a far broader context than what it had in the past.
With the integration of information technology, modern flexible furniture and changing teacher practices, traditional classroom learning has shifted from a single focus on acquisition of knowledge to a blended focus of knowledge acquisition and the development of vital life skills such as the ability to undertake high order thinking, work independently and in teams, collaborative learning, decision making and leadership.
No longer is the teacher the font of all knowledge; instead staff recognise information is freely available to all and so they work with, and guide boys to spark their curiosity, develop their passions and help them understand learning is an exciting life long journey.
This does not equate to a less rigorous curriculum. At BGS we emphasise academic development. The School has achieved strong academic results over many years in both the external NAPLAN testing in the younger years and the VCE in the final years, assuring our place as one of the leading schools in Victoria.
Nevertheless, BGS is an open entry school catering for boys of widely differing abilities. Each boy is encouraged to achieve his utmost and reach his personal best.
Learning at Brighton Grammar goes way beyond the classroom. As part of his broad and progressive educational experience every boy undertakes the discipline, effort and joy of learning a musical instrument; he learns the skills of sport, the pleasure of winning and how to lose with grace; the offsite outdoor education program for boys from Year 2 progressively instils in each boy a sense of self confidence and achievement as each year harder and harder physical and riskier challenges are met; and our boys learn what it is to be part of a wider community and to give back through a diverse range of social service activities.
These are just a few of the learning opportunities on offer at BGS. Please explore our website further to learn more or contact us to arrange a visit.
