Course Content

Each year of secondary school prepares students for the following year.

Year 7 and 8

(40 weeks)

The curriculum in years 7 and 8 (our Middle School) is somewhat different to that in the senior years.

All boys study
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Humanities (1 semester Geography and 1 semester of History)
• Physical Education
• Music
• Drama
• LOTE (Language other than English). The four languages on offer are Chinese, Japanese, French and Latin
• Creative Design & Technology (CDT) – a new subject that combines elements of woodwork and technics with an overall understanding of design principles and processes

Year 9

(40 weeks)

All boys in Year 9 study core program of
• English (or EAL)
• Mathematics
• Science
• History
• Geography
• Health and Physical Education
• LOTE (French or Japanese or Latin or English Language)
• Religious Education

Boys choose from a range of learning options including:
• Drama
• Visual Communication and Design
• Woodcraft
• Art
• Music
• Commerce
• Politics
• Robotics

Please note: ICT is integrated across the curriculum

Year 10

(40 weeks)

Our curriculum philosophy at Year 10 is one of guided choice, with increasing room for challenge. Year 10 is regarded as a transition year from a compulsory and common curriculum to the more specialised pathways that boys plan in the two-year VCE program offering students an opportunity to undertake a wide variety of programs.

There is an increasing range of VCE options at Year 10 as well as an emphasis on career education and the very challenging Year 10 Outdoor education camps program.

All boys in Year 10 will study a core program of:

• English (or EAL)
• Mathematics (or Foundation Maths)
• Science
• Health and Physical Education
• History
• Religious Education

Elective subject options include:

• VCE Unit 1/2 subjects of Business Management, Legal Studies, Geography, 20th Century History, Politics, Psychology, Maths Methods, Theatre Studies, Physical Education, Biology, Chemistry and Physics
• LOTE (French, Japanese, Latin, Chinese)
• Commerce
• Art
• Visual Communication & Design
• Wood Technology
• IT programming
• IT Games Development
• Music

Year 11

(40 weeks)

The only compulsory subjects for boys in Year 11 at Brighton Grammar School are English (or EAL – English as a second language) and Religious Education.

Boys may be eligible to undertake a VCE Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11 to maximise his ATAR in Year 12.

Year 12

(40 weeks)

Modes of Study

Classes in all year levels at BGS are offered on campus only.

In the event a student wishes to undertake a subject in the VCE years that the School doesn’t currently offer, the subject may be available from another provider. For more information on this you should contact the Head of Senior School directly.
