BGS and Berendale buddies
Since 1945, the ‘Frankston Camp’ (no longer held in Frankston, but at Campaspe Downs in Kyneton) has been a highlight of the BGS calendar. The four-day camp brings together boys of various ages from BGS and Berendale Secondary Special School. It is believed to be the longest-running camp for children with disabilities in Australia.
The Sony Foundation Frankston Camp provides an enjoyable balance of physical activities (Campaspe Downs has a great ropes course and an Aeroball trampoline) and more low-key sessions to enable the students to chill out together at the end of the school year. The 2017 Camp included annual rituals such as a road trip to Ballarat, as well as new initiatives, such as the inaugural ‘Christmas in the Park’, during which the campers were joined by parents from both schools. The highlight of this event was the arrival of ‘Santa Smith’, who gave out gifts to the Berendale boys, provided by their BGS buddies.
To our wonderful five Year 11 leaders: thank you. For some of you, it was your fifth and final Frankston Camp and the emotion that bubbled over on the final morning shows how much you care for your Berendale buddies. Our passionate and loyal staff, including Anthony Keane, Stephanie Shane, Matt McLellan, Joshua Moore and Tony Smith, again provided the support required to enable this great BGS tradition to continue.
