Mount Alexander Chess Competition

Last Friday, ten of our best chess players took a long trip to Castlemaine to compete in the Mount Alexander Schools Chess Competition. It was a unique opportunity for the boys to play in a team event against schools from all across Victoria.

Our ‘A’ team, including chess captain Phillip Guo, as well as Sasha Parsons, Kai-Yee Hall, William Speyer and Victor Jakobus. The A team got off to a good start but suffered an early loss, which meant that our B team – William Wu, Mitchell Kelly, Paris Sitzoukis and Year 8 boys Edward Forster and Jaikob Akinci –moved rapidly into second place, and they held this position throughout the day.

Paris Sitzoukis was the top scorer for the day, winning 6 of his 7 matches, but William Wu and the quick-finishing Jaikob Akinci both achieved 5 wins and a draw. Their strong finish was made even sweeter as the final results came in, with the ‘A’ team finishing third in our division. Every boy got a medal and was part of a trophy-winning team.

Boys who wish to participate in chess should come along to our Friday lunchtime sessions, and sign up for the tournaments held one or two times each term.
