From the Head of the Crowther Centre – Dr Ray Swann
Planting the trees that you will never see
It was with great pleasure that we hosted James Kerr this week at Brighton Grammar. On Monday evening, over 600 members of our community came and heard his keynote about building culture. Earlier that day, James had run sessions with the Prefects and Student leaders, the School Executive as well as the Sport Coaches.
Part of James’ message is that there are three keys to building a team that he has observed time and time again: having both humility and humour, striving for excellence, and building respect. He described how so many of the members of high-performing teams, be it the All Blacks, Team GB or Manchester City, wanted to leave the club better than how they found it. He described how Richie McCaw (a famous New Zealand Captain) wanted to not only be the best number 7 (to pay respect to those that had gone before), but how he wanted to raise the number 7 up for those that came after him. This was a very similar message to Australian of the Year David Morrison’s message delivered at BGS a few years ago of being a leader right now, respecting the past, and planning for the future.
When you listen to James speak, it is easier to see how effort and striving are connected to purpose. By wanting to ‘be’ more, we then draw others into the story. By committing with effort, we clearly demonstrate purpose.
