Settling back in

It has been heart-warming this week to see so many of our boys and staff return on campus. Although some have wondered about ‘yet another change’, I know many are just glad to come back to more familiar circumstances. However you are feeling, we are here to support you as parents. So please reach out if you have any questions or would like to chat as we navigate the next chapter together.

Circle of Influence

A key part of the work that we do at the School is in teacher improvement in the form of Instructional Coaching. Basically, staff work together with another colleague or ‘coach’ to talk about ideas, as well as using classroom video recordings to reflect and improve on what they do.

During a recent coaching session with my coachee, we talked about all of the changes and how to prioritise things. One of the best pieces I have seen on this, which I thought I’d mention (or remind you of – as I’m sure that many people have read it already) is from Steven Covey’s book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The idea is about a circle of influence versus a circle of concern. The circle of influence is really what we do – it is the issues or items that we can influence or change. It is smaller than our circle of concern, which is about a wider range of things that are usually outside our level of control.

Covey’s concept suggests that by adopting a ‘proactive focus’ over a ‘reactive focus’, we can develop a positive energy to make things happen and reach our goals. Doing so will increase the circle of influence, which leads to more positive outcomes again.

So, we have a choice about where we focus our intention and energies. As I am sure you would agree, it will be most productive to focus our energy on the things in our circle of influence as we settle back into on-site learning.

We can see the evidence of change. Let’s work together to build capacity and, importantly, not worry as much about the things we cannot change… which reminds me of this wonderful prayer of serenity: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
