Dr Ray Swann
Deputy Headmaster, Head of the Crowther CentreIt’s a change of pace for us this week at the Crowther Centre, with Dr Ray Swann and Dr Mark Dowley in New Orleans to present at the TLC conference. The next stop is Richmond, Virginia, to work on Rite of Passage with an all-boys private school, before rounding out their trip presenting at the first international +M Conference in California.
Joining forces with a terrific line up of experts in the health of boys and young men, with a shared vision for supporting boys to be authentic, motivated, connected and future fit, the day is sure to create a lot of conversation which we look forward to sharing soon!
As always, if you have any suggestions about what you’d like to see in the eNews, please contact us at the Crowther Centre.
Effective Exam Preparation
In the Effective Learner Program (ELP), we’re helping our students become more effective learners.
In this article, I’ll explain the current focus of the program, which leverages a simple model of memory that I described in more detail here and retrieval practice covered here.
The current focus of the ELP is on exam readiness, helping students apply effective study techniques, including retrieval practice and spaced practice. To support this, Years 7-11 students have been given access to an exam preparation template and a completed example.
Students have also been given dedicated time in Tuesday Pastoral sessions to complete this, along with guidance on suggested methods for breaking down preparation by topic/unit.
Additionally, Year 8-11s benefitted from insights shared by former School Captain, James Clarkson (OB 2023), who offered tips on optimising exam preparation routines. His message, encouraging students to use exams to discover their best study strategies, was well received.
These students also benefitted from Mr Chris Dale’s session on maximising physical and mental performance through sleep, diet, and exercise.
In the final ELP sessions, students are using time to complete exam preparation while tutors check in on their progress.
To learn more about spaced retrieval, you can watch the instructional video used to guide students on this technique.
