From the Head of the Crowther Centre – Dr Ray Swann

I belong, we belong

We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong

– Pat Benatar

It was a powerful week in the Secondary School this week with the Legacy Project. School Captain Brad Marais continued with his powerful ‘As One’ message to a captivated group of students. He talked to them about the values of the School and the legacy of what has gone before – with guest appearances and speeches from Andy McGrath (OB 2016) and George Fry (OB 2015) – which was all made real through chantology and ritual.

Christian Machar (Head of Student leadership) recently shared with me a study that focuses on how feeling a greater sense of belonging helped students to feel more optimistic in school. In the study, over 4000 students were surveyed and researchers found that a heightened sense of belonging improved the mental health of the students. A summary of the research can be found here.

At a recent assembly in the Junior School, Peter Tellefson commented on (and we got to see first-hand) just how far the boys in Prep have come with their literacy. As you will see from the images below, the Preps were asked to brainstorm what they would do if they were afforded an opportunity to be a king for the day. Their ideas ranged from sending Mr Featherston back to the ELC to taking over the school. Their literacy progress is totally remarkable … but let’s hope their ideas don’t become a reality!

Finally, as the term draws to a close, I hope that this holiday period provides you with some family time – that is, of course, one of the places that we learn most about belonging and community!
