A word from the Headmaster, Ross Featherston

Man Up

As we prepare to farewell the young men who make up the BGS Class of 2016, I was compelled on Tuesday evening to watch the first episode of Man Up – a three-part documentary series on the ABC.

Man Up explores masculinity and men’s mental health in Australia today. It’s a confronting and challenging series, yet one that I commend to you. The website that is attached to the series can be found here.

On a slightly different note, best wishes to our Middle and Senior School athletes this Saturday afternoon as they run, jump and throw at the APS Athletics Final at Albert Park. It would be great to see as many BGS supporters there as the team hopes to match (or even better) last year’s excellent third place.

From the Head of Senior School, Ray Swann

A massive highlight this week has been the incredible performances of our athletes in preparation for the APS athletics carnival on Saturday. To qualify in 18 A division finals (up from 16 last year) is a wonderful achievement and is no doubt due to the hard work of the boys, the parent support group and of course the staff and coaches. We wish them the very best for Saturday.

This Monday 17 October marks one of the most important dates in our school year – Valedictory Day. On this day, the boys celebrate with humour, emotion and ‘beat the bounds’ of their time and passage from boyhood to manhood. A reminder that we have communicated arrangements to parents through School Stream and again thank you for your support of this ritual.

Housemuseum excursion

The Year 9 and 10 Art students went to the Lyon Housemuseum in Kew on Tuesday. They received a personal tour from Yueji Lyon of her house which also doubles as a contemporary Australian art gallery. The boys were able to see first hand some amazing artworks by such art stars as Howard Arkley and Patricia Piccinini, as well as the spectacular Housemuseum itself, designed by Yueji’s husband and BGS Old Boy Corbett Lyon (1973).

From the Chaplain

What should the last Chapel for the 2016 Year 12 look like?
Observe these images, they speak for themselves.

All these objects speak of the substance of the experience of BGS. Six students representing each House spoke of “What Brighton Grammar means to me.”  The common theme was ‘relationship’, ‘community’ and mates who ‘actually give you the will to continue’.

This is indeed something special.
