“To lead people, walk beside them.”

Leadership at Brighton Grammar is about far more than having a fancy title and blazer pocket. Through opportunities such as OELP, coaching and mentoring, service initiatives, co-curricular leadership and student voice, boys learn that leadership begins with contribution.

At its heart, leadership is an act of service: noticing the needs of others, stepping forward to help and using one’s influence for the benefit of the community. In doing so, boys discover that service is mutually beneficial. Those who serve not only strengthen the lives of others but also develop a deeper sense of purpose, connection and belonging themselves. This aligns strongly with what our community values most: helping young men understand that success is not just about individual achievement but about the positive difference they make in the lives of others.

Leadership opportunities provide an important training ground for the skills that will matter most in an increasingly technological world. While information has never been more accessible, the distinctly human capacities of communication, empathy and relationship-building are highly valued. Through public speaking, leading teams, facilitating discussions, mentoring younger students and representing their peers, boys learn how to communicate with confidence, enrol others in a shared vision and motivate people towards a common goal. These experiences help students develop the ability to influence not through authority but through trust and authenticity.

We are looking forward to inducting our 2027 Secondary School leaders during Chapel service tomorrow and wish them all the best as they step into their new roles.

As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions. If there are particular learning, wellbeing or parenting topics you would like us to explore, please do not hesitate to reach out.
