STEM Racing: BGS Cup
Celebration of InnovationBrighton Grammar School students once again showcased their creativity, teamwork, and technical skills at this year’s BGS Cup, held on Saturday 16 August. The annual Stem Racing competition gives students hands-on experience in STEM while developing critical skills like communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.
Students formed teams and set out to design and engineer 60-gram F1 race cars using Fusion 360. Each car was crafted from precision-cut balsa wood and featured a 3D-printed wing for optimal aerodynamics. But the challenge went far beyond engineering, students also created detailed portfolios, marketing plans, and branding materials, bringing their projects to life in every dimension.
Team roles were essential to success:
- Engineer: Focused on car design and performance.
- Team Manager: Coordinated team progress and deadlines.
- Manufacturing: Ensured precision in building the car.
- Marketing and Branding: Developed the team’s visual identity and promotional materials.
This structure allowed students to not only refine technical skills but also strengthen teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
The competition was fierce, featuring the following teams:
Professional class: QUASII (Everett Quinert, Luke Zheng, Allen Wei, Jackson Li and Terry Ding)
Professional class: STRIVE (Caleb Aceri, James McCallum, Branden Turner, Myles Burchell, Bailey Suddes and Yareed Muhmudal)
Development class: RPM (Andy Chen, Even Auden, Oliver Watson , John Allen and Roy Gu)
Development class: PERTINAX RACING (Hamish Halliday, Aaron Wang, Charlie Hunter and Anahad Vishnuvajjula)
Awards went to the teams who shone brightest:
- Best Verbals: RPM
- Best Team Branding: RPM
- Knockout Champions: QUASII
The overall Development Class BGS Cup was claimed by RPM, while QUASII took out the Professional Class BGS Cup, demonstrating excellence across all areas of the competition.
The BGS Cup is more than a race, it’s a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and perseverance. We are incredibly proud of all students for their dedication and ingenuity, and we can’t wait to see them take their skills to the State Finals later this year!
