Headmaster, Brighton Grammar School

This week, we launched 100 Acts of Kindness with our Year 7s, a new initiative encouraging all students to complete 100 meaningful acts of kindness throughout the 2026 school year.

Students are being guided to make kindness a daily habit, both in how they treat others and how they contribute to our community.

Acts of kindness may be simple yet impactful: including others, expressing gratitude, supporting classmates and friends, volunteering, caring for the environment, or showing patience and respect. We also reminded students that kindness toward themselves is equally important.

Kindness is a core expectation at our school and is an essential part of what unites us as one community. We share the same crest, the same campus, and the same commitment to supporting one another.

As we head into the long weekend, I encourage all students and our broader community to practise kindness in every interaction.

As the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop reminds us, ‘No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.’

Finally, our new Uniform Shop opens on Saturday 14 March, located next to the Duigan Centre in St Andrews Street for parents’ convenience. Join us for the opening at 8.00am.

Deputy Headmaster, Head of Secondary School

As we head into the long weekend, it is a welcome opportunity for our staff and students to pause and catch their breath after a busy start to the year. The term has moved quickly, and this short break provides a valuable chance to rest and recharge before the final few weeks of Term 1.

Our second group of Year 8 students return from camp this week, concluding a wonderful experience for the cohort. I am sure the boys will appreciate the long weekend as an opportunity to unwind after their time away.

There is much to look forward to in the remainder of the term, including Head of the River and the STEM Racing National Finals, exciting opportunities to showcase the talent and commitment of our students. As the summer sport season draws to a close, our First Tennis remain undefeated and in a strong position heading into the final rounds. We wish all summer sport teams every success in their remaining fixtures.

Year 7 will soon head to the Mornington Peninsula for camp, while our Year 12 students continue completing their first SACs and look ahead with excitement to their Year 12 Formal on the final day of term.

I hope the long weekend allows everyone to recharge and return refreshed for a strong finish to the term.

Cricket Success

Great success over the weekend as Kaevish Bhasin (Year 10) and Ned Bolton (Year 9) were crowned Australian champions after Victoria clinched the Under 15 Cricket National Championship title. Both boys had an outstanding carnival and played pivotal roles in Team Victoria’s success.

Opening the batting, Ned finished as the tournament’s second highest run scorer, with an impressive 156 runs at 39, including a classy 75* against South Australia.

Kaevish captained Victoria and got it done with bat and ball. He took six wickets at 21 including a game changing 4-9 against South Australia as well a handy 63 not out of 40 balls against ACT.

Team Victoria had a fantastic tournament, finishing with the 2026 U15 National Championship gold medal. The win was a true team effort, with Kaevish, Ned and their teammates all playing important roles in key moments throughout the carnival.

Gold Medal

Year 10 student Luke Wang achieved outstanding success in the Karate Victoria State Championships held on the weekend. Luke was awarded a gold medal in the Kumite (sparring) Individual Male Cadets -63kg category.

As a result of this achievement, he has been selected to represent Victoria at the Karate Australian Open (an international event) in Sydney next month, as well as at the Karate National Championship in July.

We wish Luke well for both events.

Careers Expo

Year 10-12 Brighton Grammar students and their families can explore tertiary study and future career opportunities at this year’s Careers Expo in The Duigan Centre on Tuesday 17 March, from 3.30-5.30pm.

Industry and university representatives will share information on tertiary or vocational pathways, gap year opportunities, apprenticeships, traineeships, cadetships, jobs and international university opportunities.

The aim is to help our students gain insights into real‑world job expectations, required qualifications and emerging industry trends.

Community Spirit

A group of students from Years 7–12 gathered to help clean up a stretch of our local Brighton beach last week. Led by Hancock House and House Captain, Sandro Macnab, around 40 students rolled up their sleeves for Clean Up Australia Day.

Together, they collected bags of rubbish and helped protect our beautiful coastline, a great example of service, teamwork, and pride in our community.

2027 African Safari Tour

In September 2027, our students will have the extraordinary opportunity to take part in the 2027 African Tour; an unforgettable cultural and educational experience. Open to all current students in Years 8–11, this immersive journey will allow students to explore the rich traditions, history and daily life of African communities while developing a deeper global perspective.

A highlight of the tour will be an authentic African safari, where students will experience breathtaking landscapes and encounter iconic wildlife up close in their natural habitat. This unique adventure promises to be both inspiring and life changing.

Families are encouraged to learn more by collecting an information brochure from the Urwin Centre reception or from Student Services at the St Andrew’s end of the school. Parents and students are also warmly invited to attend the online Parent Information Session on 30 March.

From Reverend Waterhouse

During this current season of Lent, we are indeed facing a time of great international tension and uncertainty, as we witness events unfolding within the Middle East.

In amongst the scenes of both mourning and celebration, it was intriguing to see gatherings of people in both Sydney and Melbourne, where Iranian, Jewish and Australian flags were being waved together, almost in a sense of solidarity.

Somewhat poignantly, the season of Lent anticipates the events of Easter, where Jesus will take the role of the suffering servant, die on the cross for sins, to then be resurrected on the third day, so to demonstrate his power over death and to initiate the new kingdom life that unites people from all nations.

The apostle Paul describes it this way: ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Jesus Christ.’ [Galatians 3:28].

We all long for peace in a broken world. To that end, I commend to you the prayer below from our Anglican Prayer Book.

Almighty God, ruler of all,

in whose kingdom peace and righteousness abound;

we pray for those who are in conflict, especially within the Middle East.

Take away prejudice, cruelty and revenge.

Grant that barriers which divide may crumble,

suspicions disappear and hatreds cease,

through Jesus Christ our mediator. Amen.
