APS Athletics 2024
On Saturday 18 October, the APS Athletics Finals kicked off at 8.00am. Despite the chilly morning, the day warmed up to provide ideal conditions for competition. The Tonners had a strong showing, finishing 5th overall, a testament to the boys’ dedication and the expert guidance of their talented coaches and teaching staff.
Saturday’s competition was intense, with small margins making all the difference. Only 7 points separated 5th to 7th place (BGS 404.5, Haileybury 400.5, St Kevin’s 397.5), and a mere 16 points divided the top three (Melbourne Grammar 1st, Scotch College 2nd, Wesley College 3rd).
There were several standout performances, especially from Teddy Bowen (Year 7), Arki Butler (Year 10), and Ed Urquhart (Year 9), who excelled both on the track and in the field.
Teddy Bowen began his busy day by breaking the APS U14 High Jump record with a leap of 1.77m. He also placed 2nd in the 90m Hurdles, Shot Put, and Triple Jump; 3rd in Long Jump and the 4x100m Relay; and 6th in Discus.
Arki Butler had another stellar APS Finals day, winning both the High Jump (with a personal best of 1.90m) and the Long Jump, while also securing 3rd in the 110m Hurdles.
Ed Urquhart also showed his talent, finishing 2nd in four events: Long Jump, the 100m A final, the 200m A final, and the 4x100m Relay.
BGS is grateful for the athletes who stepped up to fill in additional events that suffered from late withdrawals, we would not have placed where we did without your help.
This can-do attitude exemplifies our core values of passion, respect and accountability, passion for the School, respect for their peers and the athletics program and accountability by showing up and trying their very best for their results.
Brighton’s U14 squad showed great promise by finishing 2nd overall, highlighting the abundance of rising talent. I am confident and excited for the momentum of our Athletics squad to continue to grow over the coming year, great work boys.
