BGS A Grecian Odyssey Tour

A Classical Studies & History Tour (22 June – 11 July 2023)

BGS, in conjunction with Melbourne company G.E.T. Educational Tours, is enthusiastic to announce that a select number of students (from Years 9 to 12 in 2023) will have the opportunity to embark upon an immersive and enriching tour throughout Greece and Cyprus. Combining Classical Studies and History, this tour will explore the Grecian historic sites and iconic landmarks that will enable students to transcend time in an unmatched manner.

Over 19 nights, students will experience the sites, and indeed cultural material, that continue to have an enduring influence on our modern world. Beginning in Athens, the students will visit the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum: two wonderous locations that house (and inspire!) some of the most seminal works within the Western world. Thereafter, students will voyage over to the islands of Delphi (home of the famous Delphic Oracle) and of Crete (surveying the ancient palaces of Knossos and Heraklion).

After leaving the Aegean Sea, students will travel to Cyprus and partake in what promises to be one of the highlights of trip: an archaeological excavation. Situated in Kissonerga, this five-day experience will position the students as archaeologists, as they excavate a site which dates from the Bronze Age. Led by Head Archaeologist Dr. Lindy Crewe, whose father in fact attended BGS (OB 1949) and who is the Director of Cyprus American Archaeological Institute, students will experience the skills and knowledge of archaeology at an official, working archaeological site. Dr. Crewe and her team will also lead workshops about the significance of the site and of the artefacts, all of which will provide students with a first-hand experience of how archaeology informs our understanding of the past.

In preparation for the tour, students will participate in curated workshops and exhibitions, as well as seminars led by experts. Whilst the cost for this tour is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be within the range of $8,000 – $8,500.

Places are open to all students in Years 9 to 12 (2023). Although places may be limited, students who have a desire to engage with and learn about the Classical World and the history of these regions are strongly encouraged to express their interest here: https://forms.office.com/r/fttCdVrDqM
