Celebrating success

On the last day of Term 1 we came together as a school to mark four inspiring student team success stories in the fields of STEM and Sport.

The five Year 10 students who make up BGS Team Lunar were recognised for being crowned 2024 National Champions (Professional Class) in the F1 in Schools National Finals in Adelaide last week.

We then celebrated the weekend victories of our First Tennis squad winning the APS Tennis Premiership, the first for BGS since 2001; our First VIII rowers taking out the 2024 APS Head of the River, only the third time to do so in the School’s history; and our sailors being named Victorian Schools Team Sailing Champions for 2024, the fifth time in the past six years.

These teams will readily admit that success is due to hard work but also the support received from coaches, parents and their peers.

My congratulations to staff and coaches Jamie Watson and Thivi Athipar (F1 in Schools); Peter Furey and Richard Fromberg (Tennis); Mitchell Nelson and Thomas Creber (Rowing); Robert Hayward and Ethan O’Brien (Sailing) and Jack Joslin, our Director of Sport for his leadership.

Special mention also to our Year 10 Div 1 Coxed Quad rowers who won their A final at the Head of the River and our First Touch Football team who narrowly missed a premiership win this year.

Through our +M program, we promote a high-performance culture that emphasises values such as kindness, humility, courage and respect.

I am proud to say that all teams modelled these qualities to their peers and the opposition, and it was uplifting to see the whole school from ELC4-Year 12 join together today in a unified celebration.
