BGS+ Sailing Tackers

Be part of our BGS+ Sailing Tackers program, an introductory course for those keen to experience and learn to sail. Offered to boys aged 10 – 12 years, this course involves a combination of on- and off-water educational games and is focused on fun, safety and teaching children how to sail in a comfortable environment. Previous experience in sailing is not essential.

Designed in partnership with Royal Brighton Yacht Club, BGS+ Sailing Tackers will be run by qualified development coaches and will cater for diverse abilities and interests. Competent sailors themselves, our coaches are experienced and enthusiastic instructors.

This program aims to develop teamwork, communication and an understanding of the outdoors in a water-based environment. Upon completion of the program, each participant will be accredited with a nationally recognised qualification from Australian Sailing.

Weeks 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 

  • Thursday 17 February 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)
  • Thursday 24 February 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)
  • Thursday 3 March 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)
  • Thursday 10 March 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)
  • Thursday 17 March 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)
  • Thursday 24 March 3.30-5.30pm (Years 4, 5 and 6)

Boys will be accompanied to RBYC after school. Please aim for a pick-up at 5:30pm from the RBYC sailing yard

  • How do I join BGS+ Sailing Tackers?

    This program has concluded for 2022.

     
  • What does a session look like?

    This course involves a combination of on- and off-water educational games and is focused on fun, safety and teaching children how to sail in a comfortable environment.

    All activities will exhibit the core values of the School: Passion, Accountability, Integrity and Respect.

  • Where will the sessions take place?

    Royal Brighton Yacht Club – 253 Esplanade, Brighton.

    Classes will be facilitated predominantly on the rigging lawn. However, the Jock Sturrock Centre may be utilised for storage of personal belongings and some indoor learning (pending capacity limits).

  • Where do I drop off and collect my son?

    At 3.30pm boys will be accompanied from the Junior School (Red Square shade sails) to RBYC. 

    At the conclusion of the session, at about 5.30pm, your son will be ready for pick-up from the RBYC Jock Sturrock Centre (beachside of the Club). 

     

  • What if there is unfavourable weather (rain, lightning etc.)?

    This program follows the Australian Sailing curriculum,with a variety of topics that need to be taught. Should the weather conditions be unsuitable for on-water learning, the instructors are qualified to facilitate games and activities on the shore that will still achieve the learning outcomes. RBYC has multiple safe indoor learning spaces to utilise for tackers’ groups.

  • Do you offer programs for older or younger kids / holiday programs?

    BGS+ Sailing Tackers is a program for 10-12 year olds only. 

    Royal Brighton Yacht Club offers a range of programs for both younger and older kids, as well as holiday programs for all ages.

  • Do you offer private lessons?

    This program does not currently accommodate for private lessons. However, Royal Brighton Yacht Club does.

  • What does my child need to bring to the lesson?

    All sailing equipment, including safety items such as PFD, will be supplied by the RBYC.

    Your child should wear active and weather-appropriate clothing. Hats and shoes (an old pair of shoes is ideal) are mandatory; water and wind-proof layers should be worn at one’s discretion. Sunglasses are worth considering as well.

  • Can I sign up my child midterm?

    Enrolments are accepted throughout the term and term fees are pro-rata.

  • How can I book a make-up lesson?

    At this stage, this is an unlikely case-by-case prospect. However, it might be possible to arrange a collective, additional session for all who have missed a lesson.

    We will do our best to arrange a suitable and convenient time for all.

Cancellations

Cancellation by the School

In circumstances where lessons are required to be cancelled by BGS, make-up lessons will be offered as a group for all individuals who were impacted by the cancellation.

Cancellation by the Family

Cancellations will be accepted within 7 days from the invoice issue date each term. Withdrawals outside of this timeframe will incur an administration fee of $50.
