Generations in Jazz

Our Senior and Intermediate Big Bands travelled to Mount Gambier recently to attend the Generations in Jazz festival.

This festival brings together thousands of students from around Australia to perform, compete and share in a love of jazz music.

The main pavillion is the largest modular tent in the world, and it certainly provides an impressive venue for an incredible weekend.

As well as performing on Saturday and receiving valuable feedback from their adjudicators, the boys had the opportunity to attend performances and workshops with internationally recognized jazz singers and musicians.

Highlights of the trip included a concert by Swedish jazz fusion band Dirty Loops as well as it being the first time we have entered a combined band in the competition with students from Firbank Grammar School.

Our musicians reported:

  • ‘Playing combined with Firbank was fun and we got to learn different pieces.’
  • ‘I loved that we could listen to other bands play and gain some experience from them, as well as the different things the professional musicians taught us.’
  • ‘Watching the Intermediate Concert Band perform, it was lots of fun getting around the boys and supporting them. It was their first concert together – good on them.’

Congratulations to both bands for their great performances at the festival.
