Ian Tongs joins the MBAn Class of 2022

Academic success continues beyond the school gates

Ian Tongs (OB2016) has been offered a position to the Master of Business Analytics (MBAn) Program at MIT Sloan School of Management (MIT Sloan) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The MIT Sloan School of Management is a world-class business school long renowned for thought leadership and the ability to successfully partner theory and practice.

It shares a legacy of innovative thinking and collaboration with MIT, and this relationship – unique among business schools – is one that provides tremendous opportunity for students.

Ian joined BGS in Prep and completed his VCE in 2016. In his final year, he was a Prefect, Debating and Public Speaking Captain and Deputy Head Chapel Server. He also completed his Duke of Edinburgh (Gold) Award. His academic achievements in Year 12 were recognised with the following awards:

  • The Robert Connor Dawes Prize for Latin
  • The University Mathematics Prize
  • The HV Mitchell Essay Prize
  • The RWT Cowan Prize for Public Speaking
  • The RF Waring Memorial Prize
  • RMIT Analytics Competition – First Place (Schools Division)

He returned to BGS as a member of the MIS (Management Information Systems) team in 2018 while studying for a double degree in Commerce/Science at Monash University, collecting and analysing school data to improve student results (academic and non-academic), help staff understand how student behaviour affects their achievements, and how students learn best.

Ian will be participating in the Analytics Capstone Project. This is the highlight of the MBAn curriculum, which allows students an opportunity to work on real-life data science research problems with industry practitioners over a period of seven months.

We look forward to continuing Ian’s learning journey beyond the gates of BGS and wish him every success on his relocation to the United States to begin the Master of Business Analytics (MBAn) Program.
