Mabo Day 2020

Today is Mabo Day. On this day in 1992 the High Court ruled “that the Meriam people were entitled to possession, occupation, use and enjoyment of (most of) the lands of the Murray Islands.

Eddie Mabo fought for decades to ensure the sovereignty of his people and sadly passed away before the verdict was heard. This ruling lead to the 1993 Native Title Act which removed the myth of terra nullius.

Mabo Day is the conclusion of Reconciliation Week. In the coming months we will continue to invite more student and community engagement as we proceed with the School’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
