Cross Country State Championships

Last Saturday, the entire Cross Country team competed in the AV All Schools Cross Country State Championships in Bundoora Park.

Throughout the day, we saw multiple successes from many of our boys, ranging from the Under 14s to Under 20s, with some achieving PBs while others made truly inspiring achievements.

Well done to our U18 team consisting of Henry Burriss, Max Reeve and Jack Pollio (all Year 11) and Jasper McKinna (Year 12) for achieving second place in Victoria and being presented with Silver medals.

Our U17 team, consisting of Jesper Bignell, Ethan Xu, Curtis Leech and Harrison Yang (all Year 10), finished third in the state and were all awarded Bronze medals.

Special shoutouts to Jesper Bignell (Year 10), who placed 8th in U17 with a time of 20:17 for 6 m in his first race back from injury and to Ariel Friedrich (Year 9) for achieving an impressive time of 13:48, placing 15th overall in the U16 4 km.

Other shoutouts to our coaches, Will Garbelotto and Will Oakley-Kerr, for their motivational support needed throughout the day, our Head of Cross Country Mr Nick Kong, for providing us opportunities to grow and represent the school proudly and to Alex Rozentoul (Year 12) for giving me the warmest brotherhood support and motivation in the moments I needed.

‘Victory is in having done your best. If you’ve done your best, you’ve won.’ Bill Bowerman (American track and field coach, co-founder of Nike).

There is still a long season ahead of us all, and with hard work, resilience and consistency, we still have lots to learn as we approach the coming sunlight.

Keep it up, Tonners!
