Our Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship is well underway, and we are excited that the concrete pour for the basement has been successfully completed.

The construction of the first floor will commence later this month, marking another significant milestone for this project.

The Centre will serve as a space where students can explore their passions in science, technology, engineering and the arts, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and nurturing the development of creative solutions to real-world problems.

Our vision is to empower our students to think outside the box, take risks and transform their ideas into impactful ventures.

To learn more about the project and how you can support, please visit our website.

We look forward to hosting the VSRU Finals this weekend with our 1st XV Rugby side facing off against St Kevin’s in the grand final on the Crowther Oval.

Finally, rehearsals are in full swing with the Year 6s preparing for their upcoming production of Pirates of Penzance and I’m looking forward to seeing our Year 7-9 performing arts students in the production of The Lion King JR this evening.

Have a great week.

Peter Tellefson

Deputy Headmaster, Head of Junior School

Our Preps celebrated a significant milestone last Thursday. The countdown was on from Monday morning as 100 days in Prep was fast approaching! The boys had a busy day; counting their 100 objects, building towers with 100 blocks, making pictures of 100, decorating their 100 day hats, dancing with glow sticks and enjoying pizza and ice blocks for lunch.

I enjoyed my classroom visit and chat with the boys. When asked why we come to school, the responses were ‘to learn’, ‘to make friends’ and ‘have fun’. One Prep suggested that today was important as there is a Prep who is 100 today!!

During our conversation, capital letters and full stops were mentioned, Mrs Main chimed in ‘boys tell Mr Tellefson what a sentence is?’ and the boys responded;

‘A sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. A sentence is a group of words that makes sense. It is a complete thought.’

You can imagine my reaction, the learning taking place in our Prep classroom is impressive. Congratulations to all our Preps, they are 100 days older and 100 days smarter. It is a pleasure to watch our boys grow and develop in so many facets of life; in Prep it’s dramatic, particularly in the second half of the year.

Thank you to Alison Main, Paul Strain and Ann Maree Biggar for the wonderful learning environment they provide and to all parents for their continued support.

Director of the Early Learning Centre

This week the boys have enjoyed their jam-packed curriculum across all four classes with a variety of interest areas being taught.

Although a little chilly in the morning, we have taken advantage of the blue skies with our outdoor program, especially our greenhouse and vegetable garden.

Our ELC4 boys enjoyed the privilege of being invited to the dress rehearsal of the Brighton Grammar and Firbank Grammar Years 7 – 9 Production of The Lion King Jr and we wowed by the costumes and stage. It was lovely hearing their little voices singing along to the well-loved songs with the remainder of the week hearing ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ from the Bandicoot and Wallaby rooms.

With Book Week in just a couple of weeks, the boys have started to enjoy reading the finalist books such as ‘Bev and Kev’, ‘Markey Day’ and ‘Lionel and Me’. We also look forward to joining the Lower Primary for a performance of ‘Frank’s Red Hat’ on Tuesday 22 August.

Our Term 3 Parent/Teacher interviews are scheduled for Monday 14 August and Tuesday 15 August with bookings now open, please see the BGS app for further details. These will all be held in the Junior School, so please enjoy the walk across the car park to our wonderful Lower Primary classrooms.

Parenting tips

Social Media Influencers

Social media influencers wield significant power, shaping opinions, particularly among young people. However, their impact on youth mental health is concerning.

In today’s digital world, anyone can be an influencer, exerting influence through their audience relationship. Comparisons to idealised lives on social media can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, while exposure to inappropriate content and distorted body image perceptions exacerbate the issue.

The fast-paced environment inundates young people with information, making them susceptible to certain beliefs and evoke strong emotions. Attention has become a valued commodity, therefore influencers design content to captivate their audiences.
