Headmaster, Brighton Grammar School

Preserving our School’s culture and values entails embracing both tradition and innovation. It is crucial to honour the past while remaining open to new ideas and approaches to learning, fostering a culture of high performance.

Last Thursday, Head Coach of the Wallabies Eddie Jones delivered a compelling presentation on high performance to our students, parents and staff. His stories and experiences provided valuable insights that can be applied not only in sports and academics but also in our daily lives. To summarise Eddie Jones’ high-performance magic: continuously strive to improve, bring energy and enthusiasm (as one person can uplift an entire room), and inspire others to do the same.

This week, our Prep students celebrated the significant milestone of 100 days of schooling. It’s incredible to see their growth and progress throughout this time. Additionally, our VCE Physics students had the opportunity to visit the Australian Synchrotron, a renowned research hub for scientific innovation. As we reflect on the past, I look forward to attending the upcoming reunion of our Class of 1993, marking 30 years since their time at BGS.

We cherish the individuals and events that have (and will continue) to shape our school.

Have a great week.

Deputy Headmaster, Head of Secondary School

Yesterday we held our annual Pride Assembly and flew the Pride Flag over the Tower. A small number of students from Melbourne Grammar and Brighton Grammar came together to acknowledge this important day in our school calendars. Pride Day is a day to recognise the importance of inclusivity in our schools and communities and to ensure that we create safe spaces for all.

Tonight will be the first evening of our Parent Teacher Student Discussions. Our teachers are looking forward to speaking with many of you over the two nights of these important events.

Congratulations to David Yang (Year 12) and Jerry Chen (OB 2022) for being recognised with Premier’s VCE Awards for outstanding academic results in 2022.

Currently in Year 12, David received his Study Award for his excellence in Chinese Second Language (Advanced) in which he scored a perfect study score of 50.

We also wish our Year 10 boys heading to the Tiwi Islands on Friday a great trip. I look forward to joining them there next week.

Australian Synchrotron tour

This term the Unit 1 and 2 Physics students visited the The Australian Synchrotron, it is one of Australia’s most significant pieces of scientific infrastructure.

From outside, the Australian Synchrotron, looks like a roofed football stadium. But on the inside, it’s very different. Instead of grass and seating, there is a vast circular right that contains an electron moving at 99.9997% the speed of light. The high-speed electron produces powerful beams of light, 1 million times brighter than the Sun, that are used at individual experimental facilities to examine the molecular and atomic details of a wide range of materials. The students learnt that the advanced techniques are applied to research in many important areas including health and medical, food, environment, biotechnology, nanotechnology, energy, mining, agriculture, advanced materials and cultural heritage.

From Reverend Waterhouse

I trust that we’ve all had an opportunity to enjoy watching – either live or streaming – a match from the Women’s Soccer World Cup. Last week, my family travelled to AAMI park, so as to watch Germany and Morocco play.

There is no doubt that Soccer is the world game, and thus FIFA makes a commendable effort to market the roundball game as something that brings both people and nations together; promotional clips tell us that Soccer is love and Soccer equates peace.

To an extent, this is true, and yet experience tells us that even something as good as sport is limited in its capacity to truly transform the human heart.

To that end, we are told in the Bible that Jesus ‘himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility … He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.’ [Ephesians 2:14 & 17].
