An Address to Remember

Wisdom Beyond BGS

“Write your career map in pencil and your values in permanent ink.”

Stuart Fairley (OB 2000) delivered an unforgettable address at our Valedictory Assembly.

He spoke honestly and with great humour about leaving BGS convinced he would become a professional cricketer, the injury that changed that plan, and the unexpected path that has since taken him from major construction projects in Australia to leading health, safety and emergency response across Africa.

His message to the boys was a powerful one: you don’t need to have your entire life figured out at 18. Choose a direction, build useful skills, put your hand up for responsibility and, when setbacks come, focus on making the next best decision.

Stuart’s words resonated with everyone in the room. People spoke about his address throughout the day, and both Headmaster Ross Featherston and Deputy Headmaster Dr Ray Swann quoted him at the Valedictory Dinner that evening.

As the Class of 2026 heads out into the world, they can do so knowing they will always have the support of an extraordinary community of Old Boys – men like Stuart who are willing to share their experience, offer honest advice and help those following in their footsteps.

Thank you, Stuart, for making the extraordinary effort to plan a trip home from Tanzania around the Assembly and for sharing your journey so generously. Your story and advice will have a lasting impact on our boys – and plenty of adults too!

You certainly raised the bar.
