BGS+ Sailing Senior Program – Term 3 Bookings Now Open

Take your sailing skills to the next level with the BGS+ Sailing Senior program, an extension course designed exclusively for secondary students. This program offers an exciting opportunity for students to advance their sailing abilities, build confidence on the water and deepen their understanding of seamanship.

Whether you’re a current sailor or trying sailing for the first time, BGS+ Senior Sailing caters to a range of skill levels. The course is delivered by qualified development coaches who are both experienced sailors and passionate instructors. Through a mix of on water training and theory sessions, students will engage in challenging, team oriented activities that foster leadership, resilience and environmental awareness.

Be part of our BGS+ Sailing Senior program, an extension course for secondary students who are keen to build on their sailing experience or take on a new challenge. This course combines on water and off water skill development and is focused on teamwork, safety and growing confidence in a dynamic, outdoor setting. No previous sailing experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome.

Term 3 2025

Sessions are on Monday and Thursday from 3.45-5.50pm

Mondays: 25 August, 1, 8 and 15 September.

Thursdays: 28 August, 4, 11 and 18 September. 

Competition Day: Saturday 20 September

Students are expected to walk from school to the RBYC, where coaching staff will meet them.

  • How do I join BGS+ Senior Sailing?

  • What does a session look like?

    This course combines on water and off water skill development and is focused on teamwork, safety and growing confidence in a dynamic, outdoor setting. Through a mix of on water training and theory sessions, students will engage in challenging, team-oriented activities that foster leadership, resilience and environmental awareness.

    All activities will exhibit the core values of Brighton Grammar School: Passion, Accountability, Integrity and Respect.

  • What does my child need to bring to the lesson?

    Participants will need to bring:

    • Wetsuit
    • Enclosed footwear (preferably sailing boots but old runners suffice)
    • Hat
    • Towel

    All sailing equipment, including safety items such as PFD, will be supplied by the RBYC.

    Your child should wear active and weather-appropriate clothing. Hats and shoes (an old pair of shoes is ideal) are mandatory; water and wind-proof layers should be worn at one’s discretion. Sunglasses are worth considering as well.

  • Where will the sessions take place?

    Royal Brighton Yacht Club – 253 Esplanade, Brighton.

    Classes will be facilitated predominantly on the rigging lawn. However, the Jock Sturrock Centre may be utilised for storage of personal belongings and some indoor learning (pending capacity limits).

  • Where do I drop off and collect my son?

    Students are expected to walk from school to the RBYC, where coaching staff will meet them. 

    At the conclusion of the session, at about 5.50pm, your son will be ready for pick-up from the RBYC Jock Sturrock Centre (beachside of the Club). 

     

  • What if there is unfavourable weather (rain, lightning etc.)?

    This program follows the Australian Sailing curriculum, with a variety of topics that need to be taught. Should the weather conditions be unsuitable for on-water learning, the instructors are qualified to facilitate games and activities on the shore that will still achieve the learning outcomes. RBYC has multiple safe indoor learning spaces to utilise for tackers’ groups.

  • Do you offer programs for older or younger kids / holiday programs?

    BGS+ Senior Sailing is a program for Year 7-12 students only. 

    Royal Brighton Yacht Club offers a range of programs for both younger and older kids, as well as holiday programs for all ages.

  • Do you offer private lessons?

    This program does not currently accommodate for private lessons. However, Royal Brighton Yacht Club does.

  • Can I sign up my child midterm?

    Enrolment will only be accepted for the full duration of the program each term. No mid term enrolments will be accepted.

  • Will make-up sessions be available?

    There will be no make-up sessions.

Cancellations

Cancellations will be accepted within 7 days from the invoice issue date each term. Withdrawals outside of this timeframe will incur an administration fee of $50.
