How to apply
To apply, complete the application form and return via mail or in person to the main reception. Address details are on the application form. All documentation for the application must be submitted at the same time.

Are you eligible to apply?
To apply, you need to be a talented player of one of the following instruments:
- Woodwind: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet
- Brass: trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba
- Strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass
- Percussion: mallet percussion and drum kit
- Other: If you play an instrument other than those listed above (such as piano) and wish to discuss the possibility of applying for a scholarship, please contact the Music School directly on 03 8591 2258. Please note that BGS does not offer guitar scholarships.
Criteria
Selection will be based on musical talent and will take into account:
- the results of a 20-minute audition conducted by the Director of Music and specialist instrumental staff (see below)
- a music aptitude test
- previous music and school reports
- an interview with the relevant Head of School.
Scholarships may only be awarded to students who are permanent residents or citizens of Australia.
Value
All scholarships are at the discretion of the Headmaster; instrumental scholarships cover a percentage of the tuition fee.
Instrumental Scholarships do not cover:
- The cost of books, stationery or uniforms
- Consolidated charge
- Discretionary charges such as overseas trips.
Audience
Boys entering Years 5–10 in 2025.
Duration
Instrumental Music scholarship holders are expected to complete their education at BGS.
Special conditions
Instrumental music scholarship holders are expected to:
- maintain a sound standard of academic achievement
- perform in one or more BGS Music ensemble or group and contribute positively to the musical life of the School.
The audition process
During the audition (approx. 20 minutes), the applicant will be required to:
- perform two or three contrasting pieces, depending on length. If the applicant plays more than one instrument, two pieces should be performed on the major instrument and the third on the second instrument.
- demonstrate sight-reading ability
- undertake an aural test (including melodic recognition, intervals and rhythmic work).
Prior to the practical audition, the applicant will be required to sit a music aptitude test (approx. 40 minutes).
Don’t forget….
Your Music Scholarship application must include a reference from your current Music teacher, a copy of your most recent school report and NAPLAN results, and all information regarding relevant musical attainments.
A Scholarship may be withdrawn if the Headmaster is not satisfied with the diligence or conduct of the holder. Failure to pay fees may also lead to withdrawal. The School reserves the right not to award any or all of the scholarships available. No boy may hold more than one scholarship.

We appreciate the effort taken by many applicants to provide additional information beyond that requested in the application form.
Any additional documentation beyond the application form should be printed on A4 paper and included at the time of submission.
