Born in Ontario, Andrew McGrath moved to Melbourne in 2003, aged five. He commenced his journey at Brighton Grammar and, eight years later, was elected School Captain.

Andy was a talented Australian Rules footballer as well as track and field athlete, winning multiple national titles. Playing for Aussie Rules for Vic Metro, he was named All Australian and Co-Captain of the 2016 AFL Under 18 Championships.

He was recruited by the Essendon Football Club in 2016 as the number one draft pick and made his debut in 2017. After an outstanding first season, he won the AFL Rising Star award and the AFL Players Association Best First Year Player award. He was also named in the 22under22 team, an honorary representative team that seeks to recognise the best young talent in the AFL competition that year.
