Ben Hance OAM
Ben Hance OAM is an extraordinary Australian para swimmer whose incredible achievements have positioned him as a true powerhouse in the world of competitive swimming.
The first glimpse of Hance’s exceptional abilities came when he shattered the 100m backstroke S14 world record at the Australian Para Swimming Championships in 2021. This feat foreshadowed the extraordinary potential he possessed, which would soon be unleashed at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. In his Australian Dolphins debut on the world’s grandest stage, Hance exceeded expectations by claiming the gold medal in the 100m backstroke event, narrowly missing his own world record. Furthermore, he showcased his versatility by securing the silver and bronze medals in the freestyle and butterfly disciplines, respectively.
Hance’s swimming journey began to take shape when he was crowned the Champion Swimmer of the BGS Junior School in 2012. Fuelled by his passion and determination, he relocated to Queensland to pursue a swimming career. As a key member of the University of the Sunshine Coast Spartans Swimming squad, Hance continues to make strides in his athletic pursuits.
In 2022, at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, he once again reigned supreme, winning the gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke S14 category, while also setting a championship record. Demonstrating his exceptional endurance and versatility, a few weeks later, Hance secured the silver medal in the men’s 200m freestyle S14 event at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Hance’s relentless dedication to his craft, coupled with his exceptional performances, have earned him widespread admiration within the swimming community and beyond. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the sport, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), a testament to his remarkable achievements and his representation of his country.
