Gary Smith, a distinguished academic, graduated as the Dux of Brighton Grammar School in 1968 and has since established an impressive career in academia, specializing in Australian and international relations.

Renowned as an active researcher, Gary has made significant contributions to the field, focusing on areas such as global governance, civil society, and international relations in the Asia Pacific region. He has authored and edited numerous articles and books, solidifying his reputation as a respected scholar in his field.

Gary’s name has become synonymous with Deakin University, where he has held various roles throughout his career. He initially served as a Professor of International Relations and Program Director at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College. In 2013, he returned to Deakin as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Global Engagement), further strengthening the university’s international presence and strategic partnerships.

Prior to his return to Deakin, Gary held esteemed positions at Western Sydney University, including Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and International). His extensive experience and expertise in academia have also led to him being appointed as a visiting high-level foreign expert at Renmin University of China in Beijing.
