With exams now behind them, Secondary School boys have had the opportunity to reflect on their results and set goals for the term ahead during coaching day.
For many, this is a moment of pride and progress. For others, it may bring a sense of disappointment or frustration when their results haven’t met their expectations.
In these moments, self-compassion is a powerful skill to develop.
Self-compassion is not about lowering standards or making excuses. Rather, it is the ability to respond to challenges with honesty, perspective, and kindness towards oneself. It allows boys to acknowledge effort, recognise what didn’t go to plan, and move forward without becoming stuck in self-criticism.

At the same time, growth requires action. Alongside self-compassion sits responsibility, including the willingness to draw a line in the sand, refocus, and take purposeful steps towards improvement. This might involve refining study habits, seeking feedback from teachers, or committing to consistent effort over time.
Schools are a place of learning. While we want our boys to experience success, we also understand the role that failure plays. We need to be both understanding and accountable, to learn from their mistakes without dwelling. To reset, and then to strive again.
We are committed to supporting the boys to approach their goals with both determination and self-compassion. In doing so, they build not only their capacity to achieve, but also their resilience and confidence for the challenges ahead.
